En søgen efter svar i Florida

Skrevet 2009-Jul-8 kl 09:23

Her er mit læserbrev:

The future of the relationship between Denmark and United States are uncertain due to the police in Florida.

For the first time since 1949 the citizen in Denmark are discussing whether they should remain a member of NATO and continue to support the war on terrorism. The reason is that a Danish woman is risking extradition to Florida due to drug-related charges 15 years back.

The short story told here in Denmark was that she when she was young was in a violent relationship with a drug lord. Because she had nowhere to go living in a foreign country, she remained in the violent relationship while he committed crimes. Once the police arrested her boyfriend she started to help the police but when they told her that he had taken a plea bargain naming her as the ring leader, she escaped to Denmark with the help of her family. For some reason the police didn't arrest her when her boyfriend gave his statement.

The oblivious question is: Why didn’t she remain and testify against him. The answer is cultural. In Denmark it is not considered an obstruction of justice for a woman not to testify against a husband or a boyfriend. In fact is considered so shameful that her entire family including her 10 year old daughter would have no option to condemn her if she had chosen to do so.

She has since lived a modest life as a single mother. Now she is facing more than 60 years in jail if she is sent to Florida. The former boyfriend got 6 years. In jail several of the other gang members aligned their statements so it confirmed the statement of her former boyfriend.

The citizens in Denmark are angry that the war on terrorism can result in a Danish woman being jailed for 60 years who has lived her life since her return to Denmark as a law-abiding citizen. So that is why people have started to question the war.

In Denmark we haven't seen any evidence. The police in Florida have not given our courts any evidence. They have only presented that they wanted her and our laws made after 9/11 state that we have to give up our citizens without questioning the foreign authorities. It is a poor law.

I have to ask: Would you send your citizens to North Korea, Iraq or Vietnam or any other country just to please a foreign government without demanding evidence. Would you do it despite being presented for evidence?

I am deeply worried about the impact of this case and what it can mean for the relationship between our countries. It is possible for a local newspaper to bring information to the table so we as Danes can see what this case is really about.

Kurt Joensen

PS. You can read more about the case in one of our newspapers.
